ZMS4_40.06 EXTREME

This month’s Machine of the Month is the IBARMIA ZMS4_40.06 EXTREME, a solution developed for an application in the steel sector where machining flexibility had to be combined with automation, clamping control and process safety.

The machine is based on the moving-column architecture of IBARMIA’s Z SERIES, a platform designed to adapt to different parts, materials and processes. In this configuration, it features 4000 x 600 x 800 mm travels and a ±120º continuous B-axis head, with a special shorter design adapted to the machine’s cross travel. At the heart of the solution is an SK 40 electrospindle with 46 kW, 200 Nm and up to 12,000 rpm. This is complemented by a 50-position IBARMIA tool magazine.

But the differential value of this ZMS4_40.06 EXTREME lies in its working area. The machine dispenses with the standard fixed table in favour of a system comprising two mobile tables on guides, which are moved automatically by a linear guide system. This solution allows the tables to be moved and positioned within the working area. The first table integrates four zero points, cleaning air blow and part-load detection, enabling fast and safe changeovers. The second table is prepared with threaded holes for clamping blocks and vices, providing versatility for different clamping requirements.

The real position of the tables is managed by the column itself, with long-distance laser sensors acting as a safety system to ensure movement control. The system is completed with two self-centring two-jaw mechatronic vices, with a Ø30-365 mm range, which allow force, position and speed to be adjusted without opening the jaw, while monitoring clamping conditions in real time. In this way, process safety, control and reliability are reinforced.

The result is not simply a customised Z SERIES EXTREME. It is a solution prepared for integration into an automated production cell, where machine, moving tables, clamping and safety work together as one single system.
